The Village of Hallstatt

Day 18

We left our apartment in the morning to make our way to the train station. A train and ferry ride later, we found ourselves awestruck by the beauty of Hallstatt.

Do you believe in fate? What about internet advertising? While planning our Europe trip, an ad about Hallstatt showed up, and seeing as it was between Vienna and Salzburg, we decided to make a stop here. Later, we would find out that this is a destination stop for many tourists, due to it being the backdrop for a certain drama.

Look at how magical this place looks. We stayed at the above Café zum Mühlbach.

Side note: I need to work on my walking-by-and-snapping-photo skills.

After warming up with lunch and hot drinks, we started walking along the water. We spotted swans, and also swan boats. Cut to us deciding to get on said boat.

Maybe I'm just used to North American paranoia about safety and suing culture, we were allowed to rent the boat without any money down, no ID, no signing of anything - it almost felt odd to paddle away without anything guaranteeing us to return.

After paddling around the lake, I was shivering again. We headed to the cafe attached to our hotel to warm up with more hot drinks and snacks.

The clouds started to clear as we headed up to the salt mine.

We walked up the the house, only to start scurrying back to the gondola as we realized the last one for the day was leaving soon.

The next morning came and we woke up to a spectacular scene. We were already convinced of Hallstatt's gloomy beauty, but when bathed in sunshine, it became a magical place. We took advantage of what little time we had before the ferry left, and took a walk to the other side of the village.

With this beautiful memory etched into my mind, we left Hallstatt.
