All walks of life, pt. 2

Another memorable meeting happened during my stay in Yellowknife. It is simply a coincidence that it happened in the north yet again.

We stayed at a B&B again, but this was the type where essential breakfast items are provided, and you cook and eat at your leisure. We bought some other items to supplement our breakfast.

We met a few groups of friends and family and managed to outstay them all. On one of our final nights, we came back from a long day of dog-sledding and found a jolly man drinking wine and watching the Olympics in the shared kitchen.
He told us he was in his mid-seventies, and a retired businessman from Shibuya. He drank two bottles of wine by himself, picked at his dinner, and had his eyes glued to the game on the television. He had travelled to Yellowknife by himself, as neither his wife or son wanted to join him.

The topic steered towards the northern lights, the main reason most people venture this far north in Canada. He showed us his terribly blurry photos, so we sat down and discussed the best way to capture the aurora.

It was rather hard to communicate as English was not his primary language. Nevertheless, my dad settled down in the kitchen and, to my surprise, they began conversing. My dad is the opposite of a social butterfly; he rarely initiates or continues conversations, and he can often be prejudiced in many things. This is why it was especially surprising to me that they got along so well.

You can hear them in the background of this video I took inside our B&B... maybe it is more of something personal, especially since I saw a new side to my dad, that makes this moment extra special.
