The Salt Fortress

Day 19

After hopping on the train towards the other side of Austria, we found ourselves in Salzburg, which literally translates to the title above.

We hopped into a grocery store at the station, and I stocked up on snacks. It was here that I found my favourite Haribo of all time, the Dinos! I sadly have yet to locate it elsewhere.

Not pictured is our visits to the birthplace and house of Mozart - both locations prohibited photography.

A single scoop of pistachio gelato, European size.

We wandered over to square, and I spotted a stand selling various types of pretzels and bread. These monstrosities were huge and super satisfying.

A rather last minute addition to our itinerary, but arguably the highlight - Fortress Hohensalzburg. We shared the space with multiple school groups, but everyone began to scatter as a light drizzle came down.

When I visit other continents, I am reminded of how much I take for granted the smoking bans we have back home. Restaurants, storefronts, and even patios are now smoke-free, which is not the case for many similar places in Europe and Asia. While some restaurants offer smoking and non-smoking parts of the restaurant, the fact is that smoke travels, and you cannot escape the smell even if you are clear across the room. The fact that you have to pass through the smoking section to access the washroom added to the unpleasantness.

After dinner, we had a lovely, long stroll home over the river. That night would later be one of the worst memories of the trip, but that is another story that has no place here. Come to Salzburg and enjoy the scenery - Mozart is just a plus if you are a classical music aficionado.
