Homebound

We began our journey home with a bit of luck - an actual overnight cart! Sadly, we were separated from some of our train buddies as they were stopping along the way and therefore placed in other carts.

Here is a list of pros and cons I compiled on the train.

TRAIN HAPPINESS
  • so much leg space
  • the seat reclines so far back!
  • there are hooks above the window
  • there was a space behind us where we could put our luggage
  • I hung my bananas on the hook
  • they had legit tables that didn't move when the person in front of you reclines their seat
  • we weren't at the front so we could barely hear the train horn
  • the seats were so much softer
  • the washrooms were so much bigger and didn't get clogged!

THE ONLY BAD THINGS...
  • the lights were so bright at night and they were unable to switch them off
  • there was no big sink at the front - no more communal teeth brushing
  • the water fountain was too low to fill my bottle without making a huge mess

The days really began to blur together. We stopped at Jasper, and restocked on some groceries and found more bears. We then saw a real bear as we left Jasper.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • smelling the forest fire and seeing the smoke near Clearwater
  • meeting two girls from Germany who were on a working holiday - one of them gave me a book she had finished reading and I finished it in one day (that was my first Nicholas Sparks read)
  • the guy who bought a whole head of cauliflower and was sawing it up with a pocketknife, and eating it raw with a big bottle of ranch in the dining cart
  • people really enjoying my honey butter cashews
  • everyone holding their nose when we got on the train - we soon found out why when the smell of cleaning the septic tank greeted us
  • seeing deer popping out in a field of yellow, hopping like a kangaroo
  • meeting someone we later bumped into in Ottawa, and then ended up in LA at the same time
  • figuring how to turn the seats around and making a happy family seat with Hannah

Goodbye, overnight train life. Not sure if we will ever be in a place in our life where we would do it again, but I'm glad we had this experience.
